Amanda Puskar Photography | What to Expect- Newborn Session

Newborn Session Information

Preparing for your session:

  • Date: The best time to schedule your newborn session is while you are pregnant.  I like to photograph newborns within the first 12 days after birth.  We will set a tentative session date based on your due date. Once you have had your bundle of joy, I ask that you place me on the call list (or email/text) from the hospital so that we can get your session date and time finalized.

  • Expectations: During your pre-session consultation we will discuss what you are looking for from your session.  Have you had time to view my newborn portfolio? Are you comfortable with the style in which I photograph newborns? (i.e. no clothing). Are there specific poses you are looking for?  Will Dad be there?  Will you want images of you and dad and baby together? Do you have props of your own that you would like to use?  All of these questions and more can be found and answered on the Newborn Session Questionnaire.

  • Location: I have a portrait studio located at 467 Grace Ave, Panama City, FL 32401.  I do all my newborn sessions at this location.  I will have on hand all necessary equipment (i.e. blankets, bowls, baskets, headbands, and/ or hats).  I ask that you do not feed your baby before you arrive at the studio.  He or she will have already started their sleep cycle while in the car seat and will be woken when transferred to the appropriate prop.  There will be plenty of time for you to feed him or her at the studio when you arrive.  Feel free to bring bottles along or I will gladly provide a space for you to nurse your baby.

  • Soothing: It is always helpful to have a pacifier on hand.  This will help me soothe your baby in between poses.  If you have chosen not to use a pacifier, that is perfectly ok, but please be prepared to help me by having your finger ready for baby to suck on.  I will also have a white noise machine and a space heater on to help baby feel more comfortable.  The studio is always WARM for baby, so please dress yourself in layers incase you get too warm.

  • Outfits: I photograph all my newborns naked or in diaper covers.  Newborns do not fill out their clothes properly and they are so much cuter naked, so I ask that you bring your baby in a zipper sleeper and a loose fitting diaper.  This makes it the easiest to get baby in and out of without much disturbance.  We custom make our hats and headbands.  We know what fits baby and what doesn't.  For this reason, we ask that you limit personal items being brought in to two items only.

During your session:

  • Feeding:  Please make sure you wait to feed baby at the studio. We have a nursing room for your privacy.

  • Diaper and Clothing:  Please make sure that your baby does not have an over the head outfit on.  A zippered sleeper is preferred.  Also, make sure the diaper is loose fitting so that it does not leave red marks on baby's skin.

  • Posing:  Since we photograph the babies naked, messes will be made.  That is OK.  We are prepared for these messes.  And believe me, once you see your baby's images, you will know the messes are all worth it.  I will begin photographing baby with family and siblings, then wrapped props and then bean bag.  I have a variety of blankets and bows that we will use.  If baby is not ready to be naked,  I will wrap him or her up in a swaddle and begin that way.  After one pose is achieved we will move on to the next one.

  • Duration:  Newborn Sessions usually last anywhere between 2-3 hours.  Please plan for this accordingly.  We want baby relaxed and happy.  And sometimes that takes time to achieve.  During the session, I will be handling baby and doing the posing.  For the most part, parents can sit back and take this time to relax.

  • Model Release: You will be asked to sign a model release before leaving the studio.  This allows your images to be used on our website, Facebook, blog and any promotional advertising with out compensation.

After you session:

  • Culling, Editing and Viewing:  I spend time going through your images looking for the very best images we captured. I narrow it down to between 20-25 images.  Once I have selected the best images I begin editing each individual image.  It takes about 2 weeks to have all your images fully edited.  As soon as I have finished your session edits, I will post 1 image of my choosing on the Amanda Puskar Photography Facebook Fan Page.  This will enable you to view the image and showcase it to your friends.  At this time, I will also contact you so that I can email you your download link.

  • CD: All my sessions include a download link of the images for printing up to 11x14. I will provide the usage print release so that you can print your images at the lab of your choice without any hassle.

  • Printing: When you receive the download link, there are a few things you need to know.  1) all images on the link are sized for prints of 11x 14 or smaller.  No large prints or canvases can be made from the images.  2) I have edited and processed your images and  I truly believe they are perfect the way they are.  If you forget to tell your lab to NOT "auto-correct" (usually it is just checking or unchecking a box when ordering), then they will add saturation and contrast to your images.  These prints will NOT resemble the images I have provided to you on your link. 3) I suggest for your printing.  They are a reasonable professional lab.  Remember, in printing your own images, you get what you pay for.
